There is much debate around whether Political correctness stagnates society’s progression, or whether it sets the terms for our society. Is Political correctness useful? has it gone too far in today’s society?
Political Correctness restricts society and prevents progress that could arise by discussing difficult issues
Political correctness opposes free speech
Political correctness is in its essence a form of censorship - therefore it goes against Western values and slows society's progression
PC's suppression of ideas can lead to their internal polarisation
Political correctness merely prevents people using offensive words, the motivation behind them remains, and views become more harmful once suppressed
Political correctness restricts the general debates and thinking done in society and mainstream media, making it detrimental to society’s progress
Political correctness defines society’s boundaries and ensures the safety of minority groups
Political correctness helps us to define the terms and foundation of our society and values.
Political correctness defines the boundaries of our society and ensures the safety of minority groups
Political correctness ensures that respect is maintained in debate
Offence in argument and debate should be avoided at all costs as it risks radicalising people’s ideas and dividing people into polarised ‘tribal’ groups. Without Political correctness and respect, prejudice is fuelled further and (as seen repeatedly in History) minority groups can be targeted.
Those who oppose PCness aim to make their prejudices acceptable
The suggestion that ‘freedom of speech has gone too far’ is ‘a smoke screen for regressivism and accusing people of political correctness is an active attempt at devalidating them
Political correctness doesn’t eradicate controversial views in any way
Political correctness merely censors views, it doesn’t stop them
Political correctness only prevents words from being said, the motivations and views behind them do not change
‘Political correctness’ is not real - it was invented by the Far Right to undermine leftist arguments by suggesting that the politician/person was merely acting for the media.
